Your Ultimate Guide to Buying a Bike for Your 3-Year-Old
Bikes are a big purchase that comes with plenty of excitement, that’s why a little research beforehand will ensure that you’re selecting what’s right for your child.
Here’s everything you need to know about bikes for 3-year-olds.
Types of Bikes Used Before Transitioning to a Pedal Bike
Bikes for toddlers fall into several categories. Depending on your child’s ability and preference, you may want to choose one of those types.
Balance Bikes
Balance bikes are bikes without paddles. They come with 2 wheels and they’re suitable for toddlers as young as 18 months, making them a good starting point.
To move, the child sits on the saddle and pushes off the ground with their feet. Balance bikes replace tricycles and training wheels for younger toddlers.
They’re lightweight, easy to maneuver and provide a better fit for smaller kids. After enough practice with a balance bike, a child will most likely be able to transition to a regular bike easily.
Tricycles
Tricycles or trike are 3-wheeled bikes powered by your little one. They’re an excellent option for 3-year-olds who haven’t yet mastered balancing on a regular bike.
Tricycles offer a lot of fun and they’re affordable. They’re easy to control and your child won’t be left behind while other older kids are zooming around with their bikes.
Training Wheel Bikes
Training wheel bikes are regular pedal bikes with additional smaller wheels fixed to the back wheels of the bike.
Training wheel bikes are used to help children who can’t yet balance on a regular bike and help with coordination.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Bike for Your Toddler
Before we begin, let’s agree that many toys and gear for children don’t fall under the category of “one size fits all”, and bikes are one of them.
To pick the perfect bike for your 3-year-old, here are some things to look out for.
Give Extra Thought to the Bike’s Size
The bike’s size is a “make it or break it” factor. With many child-related purchases, you may notice that the item may not fit your child even though it’s considered age-appropriate.
It’s essential to bear in mind that each child is different and what might fit one child, maybe too big or too small for another.
For that reason, it’s better to measure your child rather than depend on the age fit before buying a bike.
The size of the wheel determines the size of the bike. For a 3-year-old, you’ll probably opt for the smallest wheel size which is 12 inches. If your toddler is on the taller side, you may want to try a 14-inch wheel bike.
A good starting point is to check that your child’s inseam is as long as the saddle height.
Although adults touch the ground on their tiptoes, toddlers would feel more confident if their feet are flat on the ground.
This makes riding the bike less of a struggle for them as they can easily reach the paddle and control the bike.
Check the Weight of the Bike
Heavier isn’t always better. Keep in mind that you’re looking for a bike that’s sturdy and durable, rather than bulky and heavy.
Maneuvering a bike isn’t the easiest thing to do for your toddler’s little body. Your toddler will need to move the bike from one place to another and lift it up after a few falls.
That’s why it’s important that the bike is light enough for your child to control.
A general rule is to make sure that the bike is no more than 30% of your child’s weight.
Choose a Frame: Aluminum vs. Steel
Most bike frames are made of aluminum or steel. They’re both popular material for different reasons.
Which one should you opt for? We’ll have to say it’s a matter of personal choice.
On one side aluminum naturally resists rust and is significantly lighter than steel. This makes it easier for younger children to lift their bikes and use them for longer periods of time with less effort.
On the other hand, when it comes to strength and durability, steel is the winner. Because steel frames are very strong, they’re suitable for children’s bikes because they may fall often and so steel bikes can withstand the impact.
Understand the Brake System
A bike’s brake system could be coaster brakes or handle brakes. The United States regulations require that all 12 and 14-inch bikes come with coaster brakes.
Coaster brakes work when a child pedals backward while handle brakes require the child to pull a lever towards themselves to stop or slow down the bike. Coaster brakes are either on or off as opposed to handle brakes.
The main issue with coaster brakes comes during learning time. Naturally, when the child first starts pedaling, they pedal backward.
With coaster brakes, this means that the child will often accidentally stop the bike, which could be very frustrating and confusing to a toddler.
Another downside of coaster brakes is that they’re heavy and add to the weight of the bike.
Coaster brakes, however, require a low level of coordination to use so they’re easy to learn and are effective in all weather conditions.
Hand brakes require more coordination than coaster brakes so they’re more challenging to learn how to use. They’re also not as effective as coaster brakes in wet conditions.
They may also be a little difficult for tiny hands. Many manufacturers, however, are taking this into consideration and designing handle brakes with easier, more child-friendly levers.
Some bikes come with hybrid brakes, allowing your child to choose what’s best for them.
The good news is that the CPSC applies the coaster brake rules to manufacturers and designers only, not parents. So, you can always opt for a hybrid brake system or you can modify the bike and install a hand brake. It’s a matter of personal choice.
Some Safety Considerations
Riding a bike is fun and healthy, but like all child activities, there are some precautions to keep your precious one safe.
It’s essential that your toddler wears a helmet when they’re riding a bike. That’s one rule you have to be strict with.
The head is the most commonly injured body part during bike rides. Helmets protect the head and brain.
Wearing a helmet early on helps your child establish the habit for their safety.
Make sure your toddler is wearing sneakers or any footwear that is closed-toe, and avoid loose clothing that may get stuck between the wheel spokes.
You also have to make sure that the area in which your child is cycling is safe. Choose a space away from other bicycles and children who may be throwing a ball around or running around and always be there to supervise.
This is especially important when you decide to teach your child balancing on a bike without training wheels to keep them focused.
Also, make sure that the area doesn’t have slopes so your child wouldn’t slide down accidentally.

The Royal Baby Freestyle kid’s bike is another one of our favorites. The bike is suitable for children starting at the age of 3 and it can grow with them until they’re 8 years old by adjusting the seat using the quick-release Seatpost. You can also adjust the handlebar.
The bike comes with training wheels which can be removed once your child masters balancing on the bike. We really like the water bottle and its holder at the rear end of the bike and we’re sure little riders would love it too.

The tires of the Royal Baby bike are made of rubber and are extra thick to give young riders more stability. Moreover, it features a chain guard to keep your little one safe from scratches and to protect the chain.
As for the brake system, it’s good to know that this bike comes with a coaster system, as well as hand brakes so your child can choose which way to stop the bike.
